Information on the Different Regions - Towns in Cyprus (Southern Cyprus)
Paphos
Situated on the southwest of the island is Paphos, a charming town that is
steeped in history and mythology. The town is spilt into two parts: the old
town –Ktima – that
stands high on the hill and Kato Paphos down by the coast and overlooking
its beautiful harbour. This part of the town houses the world famous Roman
mosaics that have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, whilst
Ktima is a delightful blend of craft workshops, museums and a bustling daily
fruit market. Every Septembe,r Paphos hosts an international opera in the
spectacular setting of the harbour - no wonder it is the most popular area
with property investors.
Limassol
Limassol is a colourful blend of old and new. The oldest part of the town can
be found near its castle where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria in
1192, whilst in sharp contrast it has European style fashionable shopping
malls and restaurants. Limassol has both a commercial passenger port where
cruise
ships regularly depart for many destinations and, for those who enjoy sailing,
there are several well-equipped marinas in the area. Limassol attracts many
offshore companies as it has several good schools. It, too, is a popular
place for house purchase as it offers a spectrum of accommodation from the
smartest
apartment in the town centre to the most beautiful traditionally styled cottages
in each numerous villages.
Protaras
Protaras is an attractive area of great contrast in the east of the Federal
Republic that includes golden sandy beaches and crystal clear waters that
are perfect
for water sports that focus on a delightful fishing harbour. There are several
picturesque coves to explore including Fig Tree Bay and inland a fertile
agricultural area called ‘kokkinohoria’ – the red country
- well known for its delicious potatoes!
Ayia Napa
Ayia Napa, in days gone by, was a pretty little harbour, but today it is a
major tourist resort. Its name means ‘lady of the forest’ because
it was once a densely forested area but now is a delightful mixture of
unspoilt countryside and beautiful coastal areas. Inland, the agricultural
land stretches as far as the eye can see, punctuated only by scores of windmills
- no wonder French poet, Arthur Rimbaud and Greek poet, George Seferis found
this corner of Cyprus so inspirational!
